2. Layout and drainage planning. We decide downspout placement based on where water actually collects and where it can safely discharge — away from walkways, entry steps, and the foundation, and never dumping onto a lower roof section.
3. Fascia prep. Old gutters come off, we inspect the wood behind them, and we repair or replace what's failed before anything new goes up. If drip edge or gutter apron is missing, we address it here so water can't wick behind the trough.
4. On-site forming and hanging. We run seamless gutter to length, set the pitch toward the outlets, and fasten with hidden hangers screwed into solid framing — the spacing tightened up on eaves that carry snow and ice load.
5. Sealing, downspouts, and discharge. Miters and end caps get sealed, downspouts are strapped to the wall, and we finish the discharge with extensions, splash blocks, or a tie-in to existing underground drainage.

Seamless aluminum K-style is the workhorse here. It won't rust, it takes a baked-on finish that holds up to Bend's intense UV at 3,600 feet, and it's fully recyclable at end of life. Heavier gauge aluminum is worth the small upcharge on any eave that carries snow.
5-inch vs. 6-inch. Five-inch is fine for simple ranch rooflines with limited tree cover. We push 6-inch trough with 3x4 downspouts on steeper pitches, larger roof planes, and anywhere under mature ponderosa — the bigger outlet is the single best defense against needle clogs.

Hidden hangers with screws, not spikes and ferrules. Spikes work loose every freeze-thaw cycle until the gutter drops.
Gutter guards. Foam inserts are a bad idea under pine — needles bind into them. Stainless micro-mesh performs best against ponderosa and lodgepole needles and juniper litter, and metal guards double as an ember-resistant detail, which matters on properties in the wildland-urban interface around Sisters, Sunriver, and Bend's west side. Guards reduce cleaning; they don't eliminate it.
Ice management. Heat cable zig-zagged at the eave and run down the downspout keeps a drain path open through the worst of the freeze-thaw. On metal roofs, snow retention above the gutter line keeps a snow slab from shearing the whole run off in one release.
